Dense wood with clear silver-white grain
Aizu paulownia trees, which grow in Oku-Aizu Mishima Town, known for its heavy snowfall, have a dense, glossy texture and thick, clear silver-white grain after surviving the harsh winter. The material is so excellent that it has been designated as a material for storage boxes for national treasures and other cultural properties. The harsh cold and humid climate unique to Aizu creates a rare value that is hailed as the highest quality in Japan.
Japanese people and Paulownia
Following the legend that "the phoenix will live in the paulownia tree" when times of peace arrives, it is said that the paulownia crest began to be used in Japan from the time of Emperor Saga as a prayer for peace. Even today, the "five-seven paulownia" is used as the emblem of the Japanese government. Paulownia has not only been regarded as sacred, but also has been used as a material for kimono storage boxes due to its excellent moisture absorption and breathability, making it an essential part of the lives of Japanese people as it is indispensable for protecting important clothing and food.
Only 1.8% of Aizu Paulownia wood is domestically produced - the rarity of the wood
However, the long-term influx of cheap paulownia wood from overseas has caused the price of domestic paulownia wood to fall, resulting in a serious situation in which over 98% of domestic consumption is foreign wood, resulting in a high reliance on imports. Meanwhile, in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, which accounts for two-thirds of the domestic paulownia wood production, enthusiastic research and reforestation have been carried out from the Edo period to the present day, and the region is known as a producer of the highest quality paulownia. Efforts are being made every day with a high awareness of sustainability to prevent the depletion of the high-quality domestic paulownia wood that Japan has cultivated since ancient times, and to pass on this local resource to future generations.
