The wood is hard, has a clear grain, and is less likely to warp. It is considered the best hardwood in Japan due to its good resistance to decay, high preservation properties, beautiful grain, and luster. It is widely used as a building material, and is mainly preferred as a main pillar. Also, while cypress wood is used in shrines, zelkova is indispensable for temples. It is used for low tables, tables, and counters, but is also famous as a material for Japanese furniture and Buddhist altars.
