This is a large horse chestnut tree that has grown on a steep slope for many years and endured wind and snow. When felling it, the soil around the base was cleared away and the tree was felled from the base. The base was left with a beautiful shine called tochichiji.

Horse chestnut furniture has a sophisticated finish with its calm grain and color. It is finished with beeswax and has a smooth texture to the touch.
