About the product

Aizu Paulownia wood x genuine ebony

This is a set of sake vessels made from Aizu paulownia, the lightest and softest in Japan, and ebony from South Sulawesi, the heaviest and hardest in the world. Please enjoy the ultimate difference between the two. It takes a high level of skill to finish these two woods, which have such polarizing qualities, to the exact same finish. These sake vessels are unique to traditional Japanese craftsman Yukatsu Arai.

Carved from the finest striped ebony (genuine ebony) solid wood from Sulawesi

Ebony is the finest wood in the world. It is called the "black diamond of the forest" and is the hardest, heaviest, and most durable wood in the world.
We use the highest quality genuine ebony (striped ebony), which is particularly difficult to obtain and has been officially recognized by the South Sulawesi provincial government of Indonesia.
Enjoy the natural warmth of the wood itself and the reflection of light and solid feel that can be seen on each carved surface that is unique to genuine ebony.

The highest quality brand of paulownia wood: "Aizu Paulownia"

In Mishima Town, Oku-Aizu, people have been caring for domestically produced paulownia wood for a long time, sparing no effort in everything from raising seedlings to planting and cultivating the wood in order to preserve the quality of the wood and the environment.
Aizu paulownia, which grows in areas with harsh winters, is characterized by the beauty of its silky pattern and its fine texture.
Furthermore, the porous nature of paulownia wood makes it one of the most insulating materials available, allowing it to maintain the perfect drinking temperature for a long time and preventing condensation from making the table wet, as would be the case with ceramic or glass.

Highly precise woodworking techniques

The person who carves the wood for the two-dimensional sake vessel "Aizu Paulownia x Hon Kokugo" is Katsusuke Arai. With his natural dexterity and accumulated solid technical skills, he has achieved a breathtakingly beautiful form and texture. The prevention of condensation is also a concentrated effort of the woodworker's techniques and ingenuity.

Enjoy the changes in lacquerware with "Kijiro-nuri"

To preserve the beauty of the Aizu paulownia wood's texture while achieving a color that changes over time, the lacquer was applied by Yushin Sakane, a specialist in "Kijiro lacquer." Kijiro lacquer, which has a heavy, subdued luster, is the most advanced lacquer technique, and is the work of Yushin Sakane, who has devoted himself to studying Joboji lacquer (Iwate) for many years.
